Tempered Glass Door vs Regular Glass Door

The biggest difference between the two types of doors is strength. The majority of damage that occurs due to accidents involving glass doors happens with poor quality glass.

A regular glass door is made from ordinary annealed glass. Annealed glass has no strength and can shatter easily if broken into pieces, whereas tempered glass will not shatter or crack because it has been heat-treated and strengthened to meet safety requirements for areas like doors and windows.

Tempered glass doors are generally much more expensive than standard ones because they have been heat-treated and strengthened multiple times, making them up to five times stronger than a traditional glass door.

Quick Facts

Installation:

The tempered glass is installed on the outside of the frame to make it safer for anyone who may walk by. The last thing you want to worry about when you are trying to relax at home or open a door is if someone will get hurt because they walked into your door. The most common types of tempered glass doors are sliding glass, balcony sliding and swing doors.

Safety:

Although a tempered glass door is much stronger, it’s not indestructible. In the event that the glass cracks, it will break into tiny pieces as opposed to sharp shards. If your door does crack, make sure you have it repaired as soon as possible.

Maintenance:

The best part about a tempered glass door is that it is low maintenance. Tempered glass will not corrode, chip, or crack over time as regular glass would. If the door is damaged, you can always replace it without spending a lot of money.

As long as your glass door is installed by an experienced professional and taken care of properly, you shouldn’t have any issues with safety or durability.

Benefits:

Tempered glass is more energy-efficient than annealed glass because the process of heating and cooling tempered glass to produce its final shape reduces air infiltration through the door’s edge. Adding tempered glass doors to your home is a great way to improve the look and feel of your home as well as increase its resale value. Moreover, if properly maintained, your tempered glass door will last you for a couple of decades.

Price:

The average cost of a replacement or new tempered glass door will start from RM 2,000.00, depending on the size and thickness, door design, type of frame (steel or aluminium frame), manual/auto design as well as the complexity of installation. If a customer has a very specific request or a unique idea about how they want their tempered glass doors to look, then there may be an extra charge added to the base cost of the job because customized jobs require more time and supplies.

FAQs

Is tempered glass good for doors?

Yes, tempered glass is appropriate for doors.

Tempered glass has a score of 8 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, and it’s often used in vehicle windows and windshields because it breaks into tiny shards that are better than un-tempered glass cause injuries when flying through the air. You’ll also find tempered sash windows in many homes for this same reason – to prevent nasty cuts from broken glass. A door is a large piece of tempered glass in a nice frame, so they should be good to go!

How strong is tempered glass door?

Tempered glass for doors is 20 to 25 times stronger than ordinary glass.

Tempered glass is much stronger and more durable than ordinary glass because it undergoes a special heating process to increase its strength. This means that tempered glass should never shatter in the event of a breakage induced by impact.

Can you break tempered glass with a hammer?

Yes, but it will take a lot of effort.

Tempered glass is strong and sturdy enough to resist breakage from a thrown rock, bus door, or hailstone, providing one can give them the necessary momentum.

Which is more expensive tempered or laminated glass?

Laminated glass is more expensive and lasts longer.

Laminated glass (sometimes called safety or security glass) consists of two sheets of heat-tempered glass with a layer of PVB laminate in between that helps reduce breakage and injury risk. One side was ground, polished and given a protective coating on the other – this is the safe side, which must always be inside when installed. This process ensures good solar control, good acoustic insulation, excellent weather resistance; impact resistance; radiolastic protection against nuclear radiation.
